Mobile access control: why you no longer need dedicated scanners

An ordinary phone scans, validates and logs better than the door hardware of five years ago. The measured numbers, the honest limits, and when hardware IS worth it.

For years, "access control" meant buying devices: handheld readers, laser guns, turnstiles with their maintenance contracts. Today the best QR scanner you can put at a door is a mid-range phone running the scanning app — and we do not say that to sell: we say it with measurements.

What the phone does that the dedicated reader never did

It validates, not just reads. A laser gun reads the code; deciding whether that person may enter, whether they already entered, or whether their ticket was cancelled has to happen somewhere else. The phone with the app runs the whole cycle: it reads, validates against the list, logs the entry with time and device, and warns on screen when something is off — green goes in, red does not, amber is for the human to decide.

It works without coverage. The app downloads the event list and validates locally: in a basement, a marquee or a venue with a saturated network, the door keeps moving. When the signal returns, it syncs on its own. This is THE detail that separates systems that survive a real event from systems that fall with it.

It scales by adding phones, not by buying devices. Door filling up? Another phone, another person, two minutes. Every device stays identified in the log (you will know which door and which person scanned each entry), and scanner accounts are limited users that can only scan — created for the event and retired afterwards.

The numbers, measured and published

This is not a brochure promise: the production server sustains more than 330 scans per second with 30 simultaneous devices and responses under 105 milliseconds — measured with real scans against a 5,000-attendee event. At the physical door, a human scanner reads one QR every 2-3 seconds: thirty people scanning at once generate 10-15 scans per second. The system runs at 4% of capacity in the middle of the rush. The honest limits

When you SHOULD buy hardware

A permanent venue with thousands of daily passes, an existing turnstile, or an unstaffed access point: there, dedicated hardware pays for itself. For the one-day event, the weekly class or the annual conference, the phones your team already carries ARE the complete system — and the hardware budget stays at zero.
